Margo didn’t take her eyes off the door. Finally, the day had come when she could take revenge on her husband. Her eyes sparkled with a cold fire. She had waited so long for this moment!
Hearing the sound of the door opening, Margo realized her hour had come. She had waited two whole years for this moment, and now her heart was ready to burst out of her chest.
On the bed lay her belongings, neatly folded in a stack. Next to it was a bag to put everything in. A woman in uniform entered the room to escort her.
Margo quickly gathered her things and hurried out of the cell.
“Can’t wait to see her beloved,” the guard smirked, following behind her.
Margo said nothing. She walked with her head held high, no longer paying attention to what was said behind her back. She had endured many trials, but now she was ready to take revenge on those who wronged her.
She looked ahead, but before her eyes flashed scenes from three years ago.
Margo and Grisha were successful businesspeople. When they married, their business thrived. Success went to their heads and led to discord in their family life. Margo knew about all her husband’s affairs, but for the sake of the business, she endured it all. It hurt her, but she still remembered him as he was when they first met. Back then, they were simple people, in love with each other. But over the years, that love disappeared, replaced by habit.
Margo trusted her husband. She signed all the documents he handed her without reading them. It so happened that this played against her. Her entire successful and happy life disappeared in a single day.
That day she was accused of major fraud and embezzlement, and she ended up in prison. Her own husband had framed her, presenting forged documents. The trial didn’t last long. Her husband testified against her, and she was not provided a good lawyer. Most likely, he bribed the court because the case was quickly hushed up, placing all the blame on her. She didn’t even have time to comprehend what was happening. The shock kept her in a daze for a long time. When she was sentenced to five years, she came to her senses — but it was already too late. Over two years in prison, she changed. She was no longer the frightened girl who couldn’t stand up for herself. She had developed an inner strength all on her own. Due to her good behavior, she was released early. Now she thirsted for revenge, and Grisha was the main person she intended to show her new self.
Margo thought about all this as her things were handed to her. The guard patted her on the shoulder.
“Good luck!”
When Margo was outside the prison gates, she couldn’t take a step. Fear gripped her again. She had nurtured her plan for revenge for two years, but now she was afraid she might not be able to carry out what she so desired. She stood like that for about five minutes, then saw a familiar figure approaching. Her body immediately softened. Thank God he was here! She ran to meet him. He quickened his pace as well. Within moments, they met, and the man embraced her.
“Margo, I can’t believe this moment has come!” he exclaimed, burying his face in her neck and nervously laughing. But he had been waiting for this moment just as much as she had.
It was Artyom, her husband’s friend. Right after she was imprisoned, he began visiting her in prison. He believed in her innocence and knew that Grisha wasn’t as innocent as he seemed. Another important factor was that Artyom had long been fond of Margo but had never expressed his feelings. Only a year after he started visiting her did he confess his feelings. By that time, Margo already felt more than gratitude toward Artyom. They fell in love. She was in prison, and he was free. Now, nothing could stop these lovers.
“I was afraid you wouldn’t come for me,” the woman whispered, and the man held her tighter.
“How could I leave you? I’ll never let you go again!” he replied.
Margo inhaled his scent and sighed with satisfaction.
While in prison, Margo learned some interesting things through Artyom. Artyom was a close friend of Grisha and knew some details of his schemes. He told her that Grisha had plotted everything because of his mistress, who wanted to claim part of Margo’s business. With her help, the husband planned and executed his dirty deeds.
When Margo found out, she swore revenge, and Artyom helped her. He often visited Margo and Grisha’s home, and her husband suspected nothing. He didn’t monitor Margo’s condition in prison and was unaware of Artyom’s visits.
After the trial, he divorced Margo and no longer cared about her fate.
“Let’s get out of here. I want to take a hot shower after these walls. I feel like I smell of that rotten prison odor through and through,” Margo wrinkled her nose.
Artyom laughed:
“What are you talking about? You smell better than any woman in the world.” He kissed her on the forehead and released her from his embrace. Margo laughed, enjoying the sound of her own laughter.
Now she was free, and her fate was in her hands. She could laugh whenever she wanted without fearing the harsh guard’s shouts. They took each other’s hands and walked to the car parked nearby.
Margo dreamed of a hot shower and a cup of coffee. Later, she was sitting in a chair at Artyom’s house. Her hair was wet; she was wrapped in a terry robe, holding a mug of coffee. She took a satisfying first sip, then blissfully closed her eyes.
When the coffee was finished, she decisively set the cup on the coffee table and said:
“Now I want you to show me those documents. I need to be sure everything went as we dreamed.”
Margo clenched her fists impatiently, and Artyom stared at her without looking away. This woman had been driving him crazy for a long time. For so many years, he kept his feelings to himself. His sister worked at Margo and Grisha’s firm, so he often visited their home and even dropped by the office. He told everyone he wanted to see his sister, but in reality, it was Margo he wanted. He adored watching her in a business suit, documents in hand. She stirred feelings in him that no other woman ever had. And now, sitting in his chair and wearing his robe was Margo — true happiness.
He took several documents from a small safe in the closet and handed them to Margo. She accepted them with a smile, knowing it was the end for Grisha. She was so pleased to hold his fate in her hands.
She smiled at Artyom again.
“Please tell me how it all happened. I couldn’t ask you for details in prison.”
She took his hand and pulled it down. Artyom smiled and began telling her:
“My sister couldn’t refuse me. She also believed you were innocent. I gave her these documents to slip for signing. When I was in Grisha’s office, he told me about his new mistress. He was in a great mood. At that moment, my sister entered, carrying a pile of papers he needed to sign. He felt relaxed since you were in prison. He wasn’t closely watching the company’s affairs. That’s when he signed all those documents without reading them.”
Margo closed her eyes in pleasure. Now he would pay for his schemes. He would fully answer for what he did to her life. She would try to hurt him.
She opened her eyes and looked at Artyom. Fate had sent her this man. She had known him for many years but hadn’t suspected his feelings. Grisha’s love had blinded her. Then came the pain after his betrayal. Only after she was imprisoned did she see the truth. And then she saw in Artyom’s eyes something that made her feel incredible excitement. He helped her so much. He betrayed a friend for the woman he loved, who didn’t even promise him anything.
Margo leaned toward Artyom and hugged his neck, then quietly said:
“I love you and want to be with you. When I finish everything, you’ll marry an ex-convict. I have no right to ask this of you.”
Artyom cupped her face in his hands:
“I’ll never leave you. I’ve dreamed of this for many years, and you still ask? But if you want me to propose, here it is — will you marry me?”
Margo laughed.
“Yes, yes, yes.”
They kissed, and then what they had both been waiting for happened.
The next day, Margo, dressed in a beautiful pantsuit, approached the tall building housing the company’s headquarters. She wore high heels and felt confident. In her hands, she held a folder with copies of documents. She was ready to meet her ex-husband.
When she entered the office, a dead silence fell. No one stopped her. She opened Grisha’s office door, confidently walked in, and closed the door behind her.
Grisha was sitting at the desk, talking to someone on the phone.
“Yes, of course, I’ll pick you up tonight, baby. You can tell me everything. I’ll call you.”
Grisha fell silent halfway through the sentence when he saw Margo standing in the middle of the office. He went pale and silently hung up the phone. His face reflected fear mixed with wild anger.
“What are you doing here, and why were you let in without permission?” he asked.
Margo smirked and then walked to the desk. She sat in a chair, crossed her legs, and placed the folder of documents on her lap.
“Probably because I’m also the owner here,” she replied. “Or maybe everyone knows you’re the real fraud here, not me.”
Grisha clenched his fists. His anger grew by the second.
“I don’t care what others think, especially you,” he said. “You’re no longer my wife, and here, you’re nobody. I don’t want you here. Since you’re out of prison, kindly go your own way and don’t show up in front of me again. Otherwise, I’ll throw you behind bars again.”
Margo smiled, but her eyes were cold.
“You’re wasting your breath chasing me away,” she said. “I have a surprise for you that you won’t like.”
“Well, I’m ready to endure your rage because it will be justified. You hid me away while enjoying your women. Now it’s my turn, and you’ll know what it’s like to suffer.”
Margo slowly opened the folder, took out several papers, and laid them on the desk before Grisha.
“Please, review these documents,” she said. “Warning: you can destroy these; they’re copies. The originals are with my lawyer, who will represent me in court. Whatever you do now will backfire in the future, so I’m telling you straight: lay a hand on me, and you’ll spend the rest of your life behind bars.”
Grigory frowned and took the documents. After studying them, he raised his eyebrows in surprise.
“Is this a joke?” he asked, looking at his ex-wife.
Margo leaned closer to the desk and whispered:
“You taught me two years ago that there’s no place for jokes in this life. I’m a good student, aren’t I?”
A few months later, Margo married Artyom. She became the rightful owner of her company and took away from her ex-husband the mansion and the luxury car.
Grigory was left with nothing and disappeared from her life as if he never existed. The documents proved that he voluntarily renounced all property and the company in favor of Margo.
This time, Margo had won and celebrated it with her new husband, who helped her find herself again.
